Vienna offers a wide variety of sights. Many of them were buildt during the regency of the
House of Habsburg, like the
Schönbrunn castle, the
Hofburg, the
St. Stephens cathedral or the
steel wheel.
Beside Vienna offers much more than the glory of past centuries: during the last decades Vienna transformed into a modern city - knowing about its strength as link between former "western" and "eastern" Europe. Proofs of this development are buildings like the
UN-headquarter, the
Kunsthaus or the
Museumsquartier.
Vienna offers something for any taste: from pompous
churchs to
cemeteries, from
museums of antique to
modern art, from imperial palaces to modern skyscrapers, from trimmed parks in french style to huge parks with untouched forrests.
Reason for this wide range of sights is the privileged geografic and geopolitical location in combination with its long history. Through many centuries the cultural, political and intellectual elite of whole central Europe lived or at least met in Vienna. It was also the fourth city worldwide (after London, Paris and Rome) which population exceeded 2 million people.
